Dr Nick Thompson, BSc (Hons) Path Sci., BVM&S, VetMFHom, MRCVS, is a fully trained vet with over 39 years of experience in raw food nutrition, herbal and homoeopathic as well as conventional medicine.

He uses both holistic and conventional practices, along with a hefty dose of old-fashioned common sense, to try to establish what is really wrong with his patients and what is required to help repair them. Minimising pharmaceutical intervention is at the heart of all treatments.

Nick has a special interest in immunology, internal medicine, holistic health, and microbiome dynamics.

Working closely with friends and colleagues in the veterinary world, he, together with patients and owners, forms a hardworking team focused and committed to improving dog welfare, health and behaviour.

Holisticvet is based near Bath, Somerset (UK).

What is holistic medicine?

Holistic veterinary medicine is a comprehensive approach to animal healthcare that considers the entire well-being of the patientβ€”encompassing physical, emotional, and environmental factors. Rather than focusing solely on isolated symptoms, it seeks to address the root causes of health issues through a blend of natural and conventional methods. This includes therapies such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, nutritional optimisation, and manual techniques like chiropractic care or massage, integrated with traditional veterinary diagnostics and treatments when necessary. The goal is to promote balance, prevent disease, and enhance the animal's overall vitality by tailoring care to their unique needs and circumstances. It's a proactive, whole-animal perspective that prioritises long-term health over temporary fixes.

Dr Nick Thompson

Nick Thompson, a veteran in the field of contemporary canine medicine, has been championing species-appropriate raw feeding for pets for over 30 years. Since the mid-1990s, his passion for healthy pets has led him to raw feeding. Since then, he hasn't looked back. Nick is the Founding President of the International Raw Feeding Veterinary Society, where he co-authored a groundbreaking global survey of 79 vets on raw feeding. He has co-organised international conferences since 2014.

In 1999, Nick established Holisticvet, a specialist practice near Bath. He blends natural nutrition, herbal medicine, homeopathy and a no-nonsense, common-sense approach for dogs.

Nick is obsessed with gastroenterology, the microbiome, corporate over-influence in medicine and calling out the overuse of pharmaceuticals in healing. A nutrition nerd, he dives deep into both human and animal research.

Nick is a familiar voice on podcasts, YouTube discussions, and blogs, spreading the raw feeding gospel. He consults for top raw pet food companies across the UK, Europe and Southeast Asia. His lectures on raw food, nutrition, and medicine have reached audiences from the UK to South Africa, Finland, the UAE, and beyond. Want to learn from him? Check out his beginner's guide to raw feeding, his deep dive on bones, or his latest course, What Makes Dogs Itch.

He's also a founding member of Raw Pet Medics, alongside Dr Conor Brady and Dr Brendan Clarke. Weekly, they dish out Facebook Lives and YouTube content on raw feeding and all aspects of canine health.
